Our journey to creating safe scented candles begins in our own candle kitchen. Each batch of candles undergoes rigorous testing to ensure they burn cleanly and safely. We meticulously check for any potential hazards, such as excessive soot production or uneven burning, which could pose risks. Our in-house testing protocols are designed to catch any issues early, ensuring that only the best products make it to your home.
Here’s a look at why and how we test for these important factors:
Burn Rate (g/hr)
Why: The burn rate measures how quickly a candle consumes wax. A controlled burn rate ensures the candle lasts as expected and doesn’t burn too quickly, which could lead to excessive heat or large flames.
How: To measure the burn rate, weigh the candle before lighting it, burn it for a set period under controlled conditions, then weigh it again to calculate the difference in weight. This difference, divided by the burn time, gives the burn rate in grams per hour.
Container Max. Temperature (°C)
Why: The maximum temperature of the container is critical to prevent burns or damage to surfaces. If the container gets too hot, it can be dangerous.
How: The temperature of the container’s outer surface at various points is taken to measure the temperature while the candle is burning. This ensures the container remains within safe temperature limits.
Melt Pool Depth (mm)
Why: The melt pool depth indicates how much wax melts around the wick. A proper melt pool ensures even burning and prevents issues like dripping or container breakage due to thermal shock.
How: After extinguishing the flame, measure the depth from the surface of the solid wax to the bottom of the liquid wax pool at its deepest point. This helps in assessing if the wick size and flame are appropriate.
Flame Height
Why: A high flame can cause soot deposition and increase the risk of fire by coming into contact with flammable objects. Maintaining an optimal flame height is essential for safety.
How: Measure the flame height using a ruler placed next to the flame under controlled airflow conditions. This helps in ensuring the flame remains within safe limits.
Tunnelling
Why: Tunnelling occurs when only a small area around the wick melts, leaving much of the wax unburnt. This reduces the candle’s efficiency and lifespan.
How: Tunnelling is usually rated on a scale from 1 to 10 based on visual inspection after a certain burn period. Ensuring a full melt pool during the first few burns can help prevent tunnelling.
Mushrooming
Why: Mushrooming refers to the carbon build up on the wick, which can cause larger flames and soot. It indicates that the wick might be too large or the wax formulation needs adjustment.
How: Observe the wick after burning the candle for a set period. If mushrooming occurs, it’s rated on a scale from 1 to 10. Adjustments to the wick size or wax formulation may be needed to prevent this issue.
Third-Party Testing for BS EN 15493 and BS EN 15494

It includes tests for flame height, stability, and the ability of the candle to self-extinguish when it reaches the end of its burn time. - BS EN 15494: This standard addresses the safety information and labelling requirements for candles. It ensures that all necessary warnings and instructions are clearly communicated to the consumer. This includes information on how to safely burn the candle, what to do in case of an emergency, and any potential hazards associated with the product.
CLP Labelling Compliance
In addition to these standards, we comply with the Classification, Labelling, and Packaging (CLP) regulation. This regulation ensures that our candles are properly labelled with all necessary safety information. Our labels include details about the ingredients used, any potential allergens, and clear instructions on how to use the candle safely.
